Sand Casting is a process in which molten metal is poured into
a sand mold to produce an object of a desired shape. It is by
far the most widely used method of producing copper and copper-alloy
castings in quantities.
The pattern costs for sand castings are lower than for any other
method and the tolerances are usually wider. These factors combine
to have a significant effect on making sand casting the least
expensive and most commonly used process for the casting of copper
and its alloys. Wood patterns are commonly used, and for large
volume items metal matchplates are frequently used to provide
repetitive accuracy in the molding process.
Modern technology in the choice and conditioning of the molding
sand, and modern techniques using automatic molding machines have
increased efficiency and economy. Sand technology is of major
importance, and the various types of sand casting processes are
commonly identified by the binder used. They include green sand,
dry sand, cement-bonded sand, shell- or phenolic-resin bonded-sand,
chemically-bonded sand, and others. Many foundries have a considerable
investment in their sand handling, conditioning and reclamation
systems.
