Copper and copper alloy castings are used for a great variety of purposes in virtually all industries. The diverse range of casting alloys allows the selection of the most economical material to meet the requirements of a particular application. Each alloy has specific physical and mechanical properties, as well as its own casting characteristics, weldability, machinability, corrosion resistance, heat treatment properties, and other features. In addition, the continual study of the effect of alloying elements on the properties of metals often results in the discovery and development of more sophisticated alloys to meet the rigorous demands of contemporary applications. Selection of the most suitable alloy to meet the requirements of a specific application, and selection of the proper casting method, will provide castings with dependable performance characteristics at optimum cost. The table provides a general guide to the most common applications for each alloy.
