DESCRIPTION: |
|
Located on a leased site at Victoria College at The University
of Toronto is this excellent example of urban architecture. The
project is the result of an agreement between the University and
McKinsey and Company which calls for ownership of the building
to revert to the University when the lease expires or if the premises
are vacated. This arrangement resulted in a high-quality building
which is at home with its Gothic Revival neighbours.
Contextually the building echoes many of those in its immediate
surroundings using copper, stone cladding, teak windows and other
premium quality building materials. They have been assembled in
a quiet and dignified manner, befitting an international business
consultancy.
Much of the detailing of the copper is unique to the project,
utilizing reveals and other metalworking techniques to great effect.
A wide range of sheet copper was used from 16-oz. to 64-oz., to
create unique features such as the copper window sills, the copper
flashings, and the copper-clad canopies. As well a number of prefabricated
copper sections were produced by French Brothers.
As the building matures, the copper will change colour becoming
more related, visually, to its neighbours and their mature copper
features. This will provide a tangible link between this new facility
and the older buildings of Victoria College.
